Some statistical anecdotes :

1-     * Australia managed to keep their honor of not losing a Test series in South Africa for 41years. Only twice they lost in South Africa(1966 &1970) and since then, in 6series, they won 4 and leveled 2.

2-    *In last 4years, only four times Aussies won a game without any of their batsmen scoring a century, and in this period, they played 48Tests & won 23.

3-    *Pat Cummins made his Test debut, he became 423rd Aussie to wear the Baggy Green. In last 4years there have been 24 debutants for the Australians.

1-   –So far both West Indies  & India have played maximum Tests.

2-   –For the first time this year, both (WI & Ind) scored  > 400 score in a Test Inn.

3-   –West Indies batsmen were victims of most L B W dismissals this year. In 9 Tests(18 Inns)39 batsmen were L B W, which is 23.78 % of their total wickets.

4-   –Interestingly for India, there was not a single 100+ partnerships for the first and second wicket this year.

5-   –16centuries were scored against the India bowling, & surprisingly only 6 against the West Indies bowling attack!.

First time in 16 years India failed to score big in a season.

Although there are still 3Test matches to be played before this year ends, neverthless it’s the first time since 1995 that India have failed to score big in a Test match. A score of 400 is considered a big total, its not only a winning total, but sufficient enough for teams not to lose a game.

So far this year(2011) India have played 9Tests, and not a single time they scored 400 or more in a Test match. Their poor batting across the line-up  reflects lack of runs, and perhaps this is one of the reason why they have lost 4games and won only 2 this year.

Indian 2011:

Only Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar manage to score centuries, yet from those 5centuries only once India won a Test match. It’s their openers who failed to score big and put on substantial partnerships, which has caused India all the problem of scoring big totals. Both Sehwag and Gambhir have been under-performing.

India have a wonderful opportunity to score big in second Test at Kolkata, since 2000 1st Inn avg score at Eden Gardens is 416runs, & it gets better if they bat second (428) in first innings.  

But having stated all this, will India bat first if they win the toss or field first ? because not only India, but most teams have opted to field first after winning the toss, and average score for teams is much higher(374) than for teams that bat first (320). It is very obvious that they have more faith in their their opening bowlers than their top order batsmen!.

 

Toss factor in 2011.

 In 28 Tests, on 14occasion teams have opted to field first, yet they could muster only win compare to 7for teams that bat first after winning the toss.

Can there be unlimited DRS ?. …and if so, will it be time consuming for officials!

If one wants to improve the game,  than criteria should be to maximise technology. 

Let the 3rd Umpire with reserve umpire do more work, viz take calls on wrong decision made by on-field umpires, and ask them to revert. 

And at the same time, take away DRS appeal from players. They cannot decide whether they are out or not. 

Today, all broadcasters are well equipped to the standard requirement in taking care of DRS technology. It takes less than 20 seconds to replay the previous ball bowled, from which one can make out whether it was right or wrong decision. The criteria for fielding side is to appeal, than its upto umpires(all of them) to decide on the decision. 

 

I am certain there is a constant feed on various required angle for 3rd /reserve umpires in the box, from which they can find 

1- no balls bowled 

2- low catches 

3- rope catches/fieldings

4- run outs 

 

and many close actions.

 

I certain if this takes place, we would have zero error. 

And as far as on-field umpire getting slack, than points should be given on number and type of errors made by them, which should be their performance evaluation. The lesser the errors(difficult ones), the better umpires.

2 011 Test matches.

So far 22 Test matches have been played at end of of 1st Test (Pak v SL)Oct (18-22)2011.

 

 

There have been 124 “L B W” dismissals for bowlers, which constitutes 17.61% of total wickets(704 wickets). It’s the second most regular dismissals after wicket-keeper’s catch(20.31%)

Yet, this is the most sought out & satisfying dismissals for every bowler, as it defines/epitomize his accuracy!.

Out of 124 L B W victims, 70(56.45%) were dismissed for low scores(10 or less score), & 50(40.32%) were left-handers.

As of now, teams are losing chasing lower scores on regular basis, and at same time targets are not getting bigger.

Twenty20 can be a torch bearer for both Test matches and ODI matches, nevertheless currently its favoring bowlers more than batsmen, which means we are forced to look at basic skills very minutely.

At this moment, "boundary riders" are determining factor in winning a T20 game, and so far teams that have scored more boundaries have won maximum games, and only few times we witness otherwise.  

–        In, 2010WC only once we witnessed a team winning a game with less boundaries to their credit, as the losing side had a difference of “1boundary” to their credit.         

Cricket has been designed in a such a way that it allows "3different skills"not only to excel individually, & fulfill ones potential, but also determine game’s outcome, yet the game’s length decides individual brilliance, and sometimes these skills are not completely fulfilled when it favors “1” particular skill heavily.

Currently cricket is played in 3different formats, and they are length-based, & time-based, each determined by number of overs and days to be played with.Their basic function remains same.

Twenty20, is the latest to be recognized by cricket’s international body where each team play 20overs. 

This format gives more opportunity to individual brilliance, more than any other format, hence you would see only few brilliant performances of each skill, and they are not displayed all the time.


 So far in all T20I there have been 205fifties scored by batsmen, with  opening pair contributing 53.17%, and 8.59 %  for players who bat below V.

T20 is 120 balls, and if one has to score substantial runs (25 + or 50+) then they need to spend some time in middle to score these runs, and openers have the best opportunity to do so, and same is the case for players who bat in middle order, yet win factor are much less, as its effectiveness is reduced compared to bowler’s 4wkt haul.

If we have to equate bowlers 4wkt haul to batsman fifties, than their success rate is far greater, because currently batsmen scoring fifties rewards 62% win, and bowler’s picking 4wkt haul rewards 74.50% win for teams!.

Tactical Method for Batsmen to excel:

With 120balls per inn, it is mandatory for an opener to play a ghost innings, ie be there till end, yet not get noticed till half way.

Dilshan’s century against Australia in 1st T20 game in SL, is an ideal example for openers to pace their innings, as he batted till the end, yet half way through the innings his score was 31(25balls) & SL were 76/2 (10overs). Then from 15overs he attacked the bowling, as Lankans managed to score 80runs in last 5overs!.

Although its not necessary that teams can score so many runs in last 5overs regularly, but idea is to have your opener or a No3 to bat through out the innings, with strike rate of 100+ at half way mark, yet have less balls faced, then with wickets in hand it would much easier to attack in last 7/5overs.

Tactical method for Bowlers to excel: 

So far inT20I, 51x 4wkt haul have been taken by bowlers, and in that only 5of them conceded more than 7Runs/Over!..

Yet, unlike opening batsmen, opening bowlers are less successful in picking 4wicket haul, as that credit goes to 3rd change bowlers, & also those who bowl beyond them, and they are more successful in picking 4wkts haul than opening bowlers, which actually is surprise knowing that white ball swings more than the red ball, but here the reason is completely different.

It seems most of the time teams are not using their strike bowlers to open the bowling, they are used as 2nd change, or 3rd change . 

All this suggest that picking 4wkt haul with new ball is not very productive for teams, as bowlers are more successful picking them in middle or at end of an innings. 

Not surprisingly Pakistan have the maximum 4wkt haul (10/51 =19.60%)to their credit, and interestingly shared equally by pace and spin.

Pakistan tactics to use their strike bowler in middle and end overs have paid good dividends, adding to this, their spinners have done excellent job aided by close in field tactics for new batsmen in middle overs. Pakistan almost every time use 5specialist bowlers, which does makes sense, as in 120balls/inn its bowlers who become more effective in picking wickets, then new-batsmen scoring boundaries at end of innings.

One is certain that all this measurement will change once teams play more games, both home and away.

Then these established statistics would be completely different than the current one processed.

It is interesting and shocking to know, that so far England, NZ, West Indies, South Africa & Zimbabwe have not yet played a T20I game in India, in fact only few of these teams played in sub continent, (6 in UAE , 2 in SL, 1 in Bangladesh), but not a single game in India!!.

What is a new ball mantra?. To compel batsman play every delivery!.

An opening batsman is responsible for building team’s platform, and at the start of an innings he is not aware how the pitch will behave, and how much the ball will swing. Adding to this, he is unaware of what tactics fielding side will employ, and how their opening bowlers will execute them.

Hence most opening batsmen will take some time to settle down. The time period is marginal, depending on different formats of game, adding pitch condition, and also character of a player.

So it becomes important for an opening bowler to make the best use of new ball, and make him play each delivery. If things are not going in his favor, and has tried all his tricks, he still needs to continue doing what he is doing, because even though a batsman will look comfortable, nevertheless forced to solve one problem after another at the start of an innings, which reduces the success rate of scoring runs, and increases possibility of a wicket.

1st Test Match, England(1st Innings)
