25 Jul / 2019(574)…CWC2019 Team Review- Bangladesh

Bangladesh Performance Review

Bangladesh totally relied on their batting to win matches in this WC. Hence they prepared themselves to chase any target. It is interesting to note that Bangladesh bowlers had more collective experience playing ODIs, then their batsmen. Yet, their bowlers conceded 300 or more scores in 6 out of 8 completed matches. Mustafizur Rahman inability to pick any wicket in first 30 overs is one of major reason why Bangladesh failed to restrict teams (see Bowling phases below)

Their 3 wins in this WC were due to their batting strength.

These wins were

  • Vs South Africa defending 331 – won by 21 runs
  • v/s West Indies chasing 322 – won by 7 wkts with 51 balls remaining
  • v/s Afghanistan defending 263 – won by 62 runs with 18 balls remaining.

Large portion of contribution came from veteran batsman Shakib Al Hasan who was promoted to bat at  No.3. Shakib scored 606 runs featuring 2 centuries. He was ably supported by keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. Other then these two, there were some vital contribution from Liton Das, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal.

Interestingly whenever they batted second(5) – they were asked to chase 300 plus targets – Perhaps it is time they thought deeply about their bowling in away condition, both pace and spin. There is some serious quality players in their bowling squad.

From above table Bangladesh had clear strategy to increase relevant batting indicators, and they had good success in increasing them. However their bowling fell apart.

Suprising to see Mustafizur went wicket less in first 30 overs….interestingly Shakib being the most effective bowler in first 30 overs!.
