4 Mar / 2026T2WC2026(SF1): NZ v SA :– Strongest v/s competitive teams
A contest between ever-competitive New Zealand and South Africa, the strongest team in this World Cup.
Herei is a brief stats analysis of both teams
South Africa’s best T20I squad in action
This is the strongest T20I squad South Africa ever had!. They have covered all bases for all condition. However if the matter of crunch situation, we still have to see if they plug under pressure!. So far in this WC they have withstood all kind of pressure that has been thrown to them, and remained the only that has not lost a game.
Their key to success has been consistent batting and bowling.
If we look at their batting partnerships(Table below) they average 40+ (1st,2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th wkts) with exceptional boundary rate and run-rate. This is reflected in how their run-rate increased from each phase. Add to this to their scoring 25+runs for each wicket regularly, which no team has been able to do consistently
However its their bowling that has been denting team’s top order. In powerplay they manage to pick max wickets(see phases table) compare to other 3 teams(ENG, NZ, IND). Interestingly they also have the highest % of overs(14.29%) in where they conceded less than 4 runs and picking a wicket!. Lungi Ngidi has been their key weapon. His ability to bowl slower variation with new ball has been a revelation for South African bowlers. This they lacked in previous ICC events where they are all about pace and swing!.
The Gap Factor: Their overall strength is reflected from gap between batting and bowling indices. If we look at the table below, they are much ahead of all teams and hardly any relevant indices that is less than -0.50!. With balls per wicket being the best example how less balls they took to pick wickets against losing when batting.
New Zealand-Always competitive & improving squad
Since the last WC New Zealand have improved their overall skill level. Although they have lost two games (SA and Eng) their overall gap indices are second best to South Africa, i.e better than England and India in this World Cup. It suggests their consistency throughout a game!.
Key factor: When batting they are the only team in this tournament to have lost least amount of wickets!. Although they played one less game, but losing 28 wickets in 6 games reflects steady batting. This foundation is build by their openers who have the best batting average in this tournament. In 6 games their openers produced 345 runs for NZ with one being unbeaten 175 against UAE.
New Zealand bowling overall bowling has been steady and economical. Overall in 6 games they manage to pick only 33 wickets, the least amongst top teams. This might suggest weakness, however in last 2 games their fast bowlers dismantled Sri Lanka and England openers in first two overs of the innings. Not allowing aggressive start and constraining both teams to chaseable score.
Their best bowling phase was between 7-10th over, where they bowled exceptionally with guile and support of excellent fielding. This phase produced the best RPO FOR ANY TEAM @ 6.58 RPO. In this phase they used seven bowlers mostly spin who picked all 5 wickets they picked.
