1 Aug / 2025T20I: -Why Australia haven’t won more than one World Cup?.

As a cricket fan we wonder why Australia haven’t won more than one T20WC?. When you have teams like Pakistan, West Indies, England and India winning two!.  This is not to undermine any of these teams.

However the question we always ask, why a champion team like Australia who have won the most World Cups, along with Test Championships, Ashes and other prestigous event – and having a dominant legacy in world cricket is unable to win more than one T20I World Cup?.

Is the format difficult to master, or does Australia lose their nerve in World Cup matches, in pressure situtation?. The answer lies in flexibilty(batting order) adaptablity(condition) and selecting specialist players(top BBL performers). T20 cricket is very unpredictable and it creates chaos most times, especially if a player or team makes “one ball mistake”. Each ball is a momentum that needs to be controlled, otherwise situation of match will shift dramatically from you.  Australia so far are not able to do it on regular basis, hence their success rate in WCup is low. Their game plan is build on structure and condition strategy which works well in longer format and ODI cricket, and not always in shortest format!. Australia has enough talent, there is no doubt about that, but its matter of chosing the right player who can deliever. The roleplay needs to be more accurate than other format.

Here below we look at how Australia as a team performed in T20I cricket pre World Cup and Post World Cup. I have used only indicator (Runs/wkt) to emphasis my point of view. The blue color stats is pre and post World Cups, and yellow is how they performed in World Cups.

Post World Cup 2024

Here is run down on Australian player’s performance post 2024 World Cup. In this period they played in 4 series featuring 13 matches of which they won 12 as one was abondoned v/s England!. Australia utlised 20 players in these 4-series with 5 different opening pair!.

In Bowling Australia utlised 16 players(out of 20)and interestingly apart from Matt Kuhnemann every bowler picked atleast one wicket.Kuhnemann played only one match conceding 33 runs in 4 overs.

Overall their bowling seems to be weakned in most matches by the absence of Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
