Champions Trophy – a blue print for one-day cricket

I feel Champions Trophy can become the blue print for One day cricket.

To that to happen, it has to be an yearly event where all test playing nation particiapting!.

My primary concern is, in near future we might only see two format played regularly by all teams and players, i.e T20 and The Hundred!.

Yes, there would yearly Test cricket played for Test championship event, but only players form Top teams will focus, and will be available.

Here is the thing, the first T20WC was well received by the audience but due to gap between the event which led to lack of audience time, it soon faded off.

Then franchise cricket hit viral, and every cricketing nation got involved in this carnival. This boosted T20 World Cup viewership, so much that now its played yearly or every two years.

Even associate countries have their own franchise tournaments going on, that has raised awareness among cricket community.

However, all this T20 fame ghosted one-day cricket. Now only World-Cup which is played every 4 years gets regular viewership

Hence could Champions Trophy be played yearly by all teams, and save this “lost” format?

This format can be revamped, and here few things that can be introduced

  • have each team playing against other once followed by knock-out matches.

  • Change the power play rule, and have four set of overs.

  • Two tactical breaks.

  • Add a specialist fielder who can field anywhere, and if needed can keep wickets, but cannot bat or bowl.

  • A bowler cannot bowl more than 3-over spell in his 10 allocated overs.

I believe all format can co-exits irrespective of time difference and scheduling.

Below table is summary of ODI cricket since Jan 2020. Intrestingly out of 628 matches only 1 % achived 400 scores when batting first. Zimbabwe is the surprise name in the list, they scored 408 v U.S.A  at Harare on 26th June 2023. India and South Africa have scored twice.  Its encouraging to see teams like Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland have made good progress in this format!.

Here is statistical analysis of ongoing Champions Trophy

The assumption that Dubai is bowling friendly pitch, were scoring runs is not easy, however here are some interesting stats.

Dubai has least % of maiden overs, and has second best runs/wkts indicator. It also has 49.60% of 2 Cons. SS frequency second to Lahore.

At Dubai (DSC)it might not be easy to score boundaries, but one can score regular runs!.
