Sri Lanka was the most experience team in this WC. Their win cap was very impressive – 1284 matches(sum of all wins that each player played)the most by an team!.
And captain Angelo Mathews has an excellent captaincy record(52.23% success rate), infact since becoming their captain his personal performance has flourished(Bat Avg 46/40).
Their batting, bowling and fielding stats is excellent, yet when they required the most they failed to deliver. Losing to SA in QF epitomizes this fact that in last 3 years they hardly had close finish and once they are pushed to the wall, they fail to raise their game. I believe the reason is lack of quality/form replacement players.
Before this WC they had fitness concern with Malinga, and during the WC they had 5 players withdrawn(Hearth & Chandimal amongst them)due to injury, and Kulsekera was recovering from injury.
One believes unlike other Asian countries, Sri Lanka has more potential players, but they need to be groomed in, and be ready to deliver for such big tournaments.
Sri Lanka plays the maximum ODI in world cricket, since Nov 2012 till the start of WC, they played 73 ODIs most by any team. They could have used the last few series to build a nucleus of players that will help them win the WC.
The ODI series in India (where they were asked to replace West Indies to finish off the series)could have been a great training ground, and just before the WC, they had a 7 match series in NZ.
However that didn’t happen, as they lost both the series very badly with experienced players taking part in it!. This is one the reason why their WC campaign started badly. Their first game was against host NZ, whom they lost badly, and then the injuries started to occur. Instead of working/executing on strategy for WC, they were busy finding players to fill the XI. In the end 19 players took part in this WC, and for the first since 1999 they did not qualify for the semi-finals!.
