It gives me great pleasure to share few from my collage of articles on analysis.
This one is “A phenomena called Andrew Symonds”!.
Interestingly Andrew’s adopted father Ken nick named him “Roy” after Roy Race a character from British comic strip’s mythical football team called Melchester Rovers.
I first caught his batting glimpse in a highlight package on Doordarshan back in 1994- when Australian under-19 side toured India for a series of 4 day test matches and few limited overs matches.
It was the 2nd Test at Thiruvananthapuram, when he hammered 163 of 176 balls that featured 20 fours and10 sixes!. He came into bat at 5 when score was 3-65. He followed this knock by another blistering 93(94 balls, 10 fours, 6 sixes) and 58(38 balls, 10 fours) in 3rd Test at Mumbai. Australia won the 3rd test and levelled the series 1-1.
Since that highlights I had followed his performance.

It seems he came into limelight as a 17 year old after a record knock of 220 in a 50-over match. It was under-age tournament in Queensland way back in 1992.

Andrew “Roy” Symonds opened the batting with Matthew Mott(now coach/mentor at Glamorgan, Australian Women team, also played for Queensland between 1994-95 till 1998)
For the record Gold coast scored 585 -3 of 50 overs!.
Roy Symonds 220 “retired out (99 balls, 27 fours, 14 sixes), and Matthew Mott retired out for 212 (117 balls, 20 fours, 14 sixes) as they put 446 runs for 1st wkt before both retired in the 37th over!.
In reply South Brisbane scored 158-4 of 50 overs.
Symonds was English born, Australian bred -Hence he could have played for England. He joined county cricket in 1995 playing for Gloucestershire.
Here are few related information regarding that and his world-record of 20 sixes in match!.
