Sri Lanka Performance Review
Sri Lankan Cricket Board will be very happy with their team’s performance in the World Cup, especially after off field distractions. The controversies involving coach, selectors, players, then the bombing incident – all this would have been very hard on players taking part in high prestigious tournament.
However inspite all this, the team did pretty well under new captain D Karunaratne –
The positive points to be taken from WC.
- They were one of the 3 teams(India and England) to post opening century stand against Australian bowling attack. It was one of the fastest century stand against Aussies!.
- They had 3 wins – and beating England would be the sweetest memory for them!.
- Interestingly 2 of the 3 wins came when there was bit of help from condition. The pitch was getting slower, and enough movement throughout 100 overs, allowing Sri Lanka bowlers to defend a small target!.
Target of < 250 was asked in 18 Matches, 5 won, 13 lost. (including reduced match) and Sri Lanka is only team to do it twice!..
Here is a list of teams that had to defended less than 250 successfully .
Sri Lanka played 4, won 2 and lost 2
Australia played 2, won 1 and lost 1
India played one, won 1
New Zealand played 2 won 1, lost 1
