In last few years Australia batting has been sliding down in terms of scoring big totals in a ODI match.
Here is a snap shot of how Australia have performed since the advent of T20.
We take a look from the year 2005 (first T20I was played on 17,Feb 2005)
In this period (2005-2013) Australia is averaging 260 while batting first, and while bowling first they concede 219 in a 50-over game.
Big scores (300 plus) is now slowly reduced to 22.60% (2005-2013) from 25.00% (1998-2005). On other end, conceding less ( <200) runs while bowling first has also been reduced. Now let us go back to late 90s and see how they have performed.
Here is a brief…
Period Mts Win% 1st bat(win %) 1st bowl (win %)
1998-2005 175 74.28% 77.27% 71.26 %
2005-2013 233 63.55% 62.32% 69.05%
Period 1st bat Won Mt(> 250) Win%
1998-2005 88 68 54 92.59%
2005-2013 146 91 88 76.13%
Above counters suggest,
1) bowlers have not backed their team to defend target set by Australian batsmen….as the drop(see box) from 92% to 76% suggests that defending (>250) has become difficult for Aussies.
2) 2)Adding to this Aussie batsmen frequency of scoring >250 has been drastically reduced to 44.82% (since WC 2011) from 64.10% (2005-WC 2011).
Here is a brief look at various captains Australia had during (Oct 1998-2013) and their legacy of success.
Captain’s era Mts Win%
Steve Waugh(98-’02) 93 70.97%
Ricky Ponting(’02-07) 164 75.00%
Ricky Ponting{post G.McGrath(0’7-08)} 20 55.00 %
Ricky Ponting{post Gilchrist/Hayden(0’8-11)} 87 65.52%
Michael Clarke (’011-‘013) 42 54.80%
