From Champions Trophy in UK, till end of 4th ODI (SA in SL) 34 games ODIs were played and only 7 times teams batted first after winning the toss, suggesting almost 80.00% of them field first in last 2 months…

since renewed field restriction (11th Nov 2012) 84 games have been played, and (69.51%) teams chose to field after winning the toss. For them the success rate is 50.87%

So the question is

Why do teams bowl first after winning the toss ?

Reason being winning % is much higher if they bowl first (51.72%) and if they are able to restrict their opponents under 250, than winning % climbs to 64%.

It indicates they trust their bowlers to pick regular wickets at top end of batting order consistently, and have less faith in their top order to score runs at beginning of an inning.

This trend became very apparent in Champions Trophy where only 4 teams(15 games) batted first after winning the toss, and in the next series it went 100% , a tri series in WI (WI SL IND) where in 7 games none batted first after winning the toss, then once again it continued – WI PAK series where none batted first after winning the toss.

So let us look at basic indices of each condition we apply in 84 ODIs
